A celebration of the life and art of Clifton Train, who passed away at the age of 94, will be on display at the Falls Gallery. Clif spent his working life as an Art Director for one of Canada’s largest advertising agencies and later as a professor at Humber College’s Graphic Art and Design.
His life long love of the outdoors was realized through his watercolours that depict the beauty of Mono township where he lived for over sixty years. In his own words; “The subjects that interest me most are in themselves fleeting – a day overcast with rain, a fog, a texture of earth, grass or wood…I hope they communicate some of the things I have seen and felt.”

Headwaters Arts unleashed a call to artists in this second show of the new year, asking for art works that depict what it is that brings pleasure to one’s mind, spirit and senses.
The result, a vivid, strong and eclectic selection of 28 works by 10 artists showcasing their talents, personal choices in subject matter and interpretation of what “unearths beauty”.
Nancy MacNabb, Bhavna Bhatnagar, Patty Maher, Mary Perkins, Jill Birks, Iris Ranieri, Deb Menken, Kayla Jackson, Marnie Cooke and Sophie Vertigan have produced outstanding works in a variety of mediums and styles including clay, photography, mixed media, graphite, acrylic and oil painting. Rink etiquette:
- We try our best to maintain the rink, but there isn't full time staff to maintain it all day every day. So, if you use the rink, please also shovel it before and/or after. This way everyone can enjoy the rink and skating trail. [note to all: this is standard rink protocol, nothing special or different]
- During times when ice is being flooded, please keep off the rink to avoid damaging the ice surface. That includes your dog as well!
- Safety is paramount! Be aware that despite our best efforts, pond ice is not "perfect" – it is susceptible to chipping, cracks and ruts. This goes with the territory, so please be careful.
- If you are playing shinny, and using either the pond hockey nets we have put out or using boots for nets, remember to keep the puck down!
- When you're finished using the benches to put on your skates, please move your boots, bags, etc. off and away, so others can use the benches.
- If you have handy a portable camp chair or two, bring them along in case the benches are full
- Please don't litter! Garbage cans are provided.
- The ramp down to the ice can be slippery at times. Please be careful.
- Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the great wintery outdoors!

Featured Artist: Adele Webster
November 5th, 2021, January 2nd, 2022
Artist statement:
My work takes its roots in my graphic arts training and my constant endeavour to break images down to their most basic form to communicate clearly and precisely, but in the most beautiful way. I attempt to capture natures perfect landscapes and cloudscapes in a joyous and peaceful way using my love of colour and unique contemporary abstracted painting style.
The world can be a very busy and chaotic place. My hope is that these pieces will bring the viewer a sense of calm and perhaps the minimalist landscapes will revoke a dream like memory that one can escape into while enjoying the playfulness of the abstracted peaceful vista. Many of my pieces are created from memories of travel and happy times during childhood. A lot of my most recent collection was created during the pandemic where it has been impossible to travel. So, my muse has been many memories of wonderful holidays near the ocean and our beautiful Lake Ontario.
I layer washes of very diluted acrylic paint over each other. It’s not until the next day when the layer is dry that I will truly know the colour that will appear how it has settled into the colour below or the wood grain. I completely embrace this mystery and I truly look forward to walking through my studio door the next day to see what magic has taken place overnight. It takes a lot of patience and time, but I feel it’s worth it. My pieces are then covered with a high gloss resin that adds depth, richness, and makes the colours pop as if they are wet again.
Artist Bio:
Adele is a Resident artist at the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning in Kingston, ON. Painting in a contemporary abstracted style focusing on gesture and color. Her work is inspired by natures landscapes, using a minimalist style she brings balance to decipher the everyday chaos towards calm. She intends to create a mood or evoke a dream like memory that one can escape into while enjoying the playfulness of the abstract peaceful vista.
Building many layers of acrylic washes over birch panels and allowing the wood grain to show through. Then finishing with a high gloss resin that adds richness, depth and makes the colours pop!

Three Headwaters Arts member artists, Marnie Cook, acrylic painter Susan Kelly, oil painter and Jolanta Jung, ceramic and glass, present an eclectic selection of over 30 works that capture their interpretations of the wild journeys, colourful dreams and whimsical fantasies. Marnie’s modern abstract paintings are filled with colour and stimulate thought and discovery; Susan’s bold, impressionistic landscapes capture the light in a playful but deliberate way and Jolanta’s ceramic and glass designs are unique, free flowing forms with colours and added materials that exude the ultimate in whimsical. They all pull their inspiration from the richly textured and colourful landscapes within the Headwaters region.
Marnie Cooke is an abstract, acrylic painter who hails from Mono, Ontario. She says, “I believe that each artist grows and develops along a very personal path. Sometimes a simple image or thought sparks a moment to propel you forward to another new level. I embrace these moments.” Marnie was fortunate to have a long career in dance that allowed her to tour the world performing, choreographing and teaching. Notable companies include: The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Les Ballet Jazz, BalletYs and the Canadian Opera Company.
Susan Kelly, is a self-taught painter who works primarily in oil. She lives in Guelph and as a child her parents instilled a love for the countryside. Growing up in England, many weekends included long hikes over the Yorkshire moors and holidays were spent on the rugged shores of the North Sea. Says Kelly, “I find the colours of the environment, the flora, the landscapes, and seascapes energizing whether it be spring’s blooms, the soft hues of a misty day, or the intensity of colour on the land as the sun goes down in the late fall.” She uses landscape and colour to stimulate the senses, and generally evoke memory and emotion with a goal to offer hope and renewal and uplift to the art viewer.
Jolanta Jung was born and educated in Poland and moved to Canada in 1981. Jolanta, lives in Caledon, and is primarily a ceramic artist but in her early years she was drawn to combining materials in her clay creations, such as wood, leather or more recently glass. Her works have been accepted into various juried art exhibitions across Ontario, but most recently she had works juried into the Headwaters Arts Fall Festival Art Show and Sale in the Headwaters Arts Gallery, at the Alton Mill Arts Centre in Alton.
The Journeys, Dreams and Fantasies show runs from October 6-November 7, 2021.

Janet Simmons Sweet is an artist tenant here at the Alton Mill, and will be exhibiting her Solo Show '20/20 Vision'.
This painting collective will a reflection of 2020, and based on places and thoughts that depict a personal soliditary moment while navigating through the pandemic. Janet's artworks are in oil, impressionistic in style, and often pushed to realism or pulled to abstraction. Dramatic light is her signature. Canvas is used exclusively for a base of texture, often enhanced with various mediums.
"An individual with 20/20 vision is able to read an eye chart 20 feet away, to the same acuity of an average person. However, 20/20 is not defined as perfect vision."
This show will be opening Wednesday, October 6 until October 17, 2021.

Michael Compeau is the Noodle Gallery's feature artist for the month of October from Oct 6 - Oct 31!
A professional artist since 1996. His work has found homes in at least 8 countries worldwide. Major Canadian clients include Rogers, The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Now Magazine.
Winner of the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition for 2015 and 2016.
Artist Statement: The best advice that I've ever received came from my grandfather. A boilermaker by trade, he had a ridiculously gravelly voice with a hint of his Quebec farmstead heritage. "You've got to play the cards that you've been dealt", he told me one day.
The next best piece of advice came while I was studying Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto in the early 1980's. During a typically gruelling critique session two young professors spontaneously recommended that we all consider pursuing careers in education after we graduated. Their unanimity and the intensity of their conviction made a deep impression on me. I would follow their advice and spend the next 30 years teaching Art at the high school level.
This profession forces me to make connections between the history of Art and its contemporary manifestations. It inspired me to travel to Europe and New York City many times to test these connections. It also demanded that I experiment and play, similar to what I did in kindergarten.
My art may seem eclectic on the surface, but underneath, it is inspired by the land and waters of my youth; Kingston, Ontario. A city dripping with both history and a raw Canadian Shield beauty.

Within each artist is a creative force, a fire within that needs to be fed and cared for. Ideas, books, travels, discussions with other artists, courses etc. are all fuel for that fire. Sometimes the flame is almost doused, times when artists are just plain out of energy and ideas. At other times the fire burns so brightly that meals are missed, other jobs are forgotten and the creative fire leads to wonderful works of art.
Each artist features one finished piece with pictures showing the progression and evolution of the work to its final stage.
The artists in this show are: Darlene Hassall, Marg O'Flanagan-Byerley, Terry Gardener, Linda Jenetti, Margi Taylor, Jackie Warmelink, Freda Wrench, Rosemary Hasner and Rosemary Molesworth.

Rick Mercer once said, “When Mendelson Joe calls, you answer.” At 3pm on Sunday, March 30, the “famous recluse” will literally call in, via videoconference, to The Bartlett Gallery during the opening of a new exhibition of his paintings, Out of the Cage. Joe fans will recognize this as a rare, not to be missed coming “out of the cage” by a man who left Toronto for the woods nearly fifteen years ago.
Joe has been called “the quintessential Canadian outsider artist,” and he is famous for portraits that make pointed social commentary, mocking his political foes and revering his friends. Out of the Cage will showcase a softer side of Mendelson Joe, and the northern Ontario landscape that has long been an antidote to his anger. In the north, Joe finds his hope; this is the stuff—the rocks, water and trees—that balm his soul. Of his landscape painting he writes: “Come and witness my heavens.” From March 26 to April 20, The Bartlett Gallery invites you to do just that.

The Dam Gallery presents the work of three young artists, Alex Richardson, Julia Vandepolder and Rachel Clark-Hall. Each artist examines the effects of time, transition and transformation while exploring their own unique areas of interest. They contrast and juxtapose the ephemeral and the concrete. Often objects are deconstructed to the point of near abstraction. A complementary colour palette unites the three artists’ work in the exhibition and lends a quiet strength to the overall presentation.
